*Construction materials imports fell 8.5% in the second quarter of 2019, down £408m (£4,411m) from the previous quarter.Exports of construction materials decreased by 6.7% in the second quarter of 2019, down £135m (£1,871m) from the previous quarter.As a result, the trade deficit narrowed by £273m to £2,540m, down 9.7% in Q2 2019.

During the same period, exports increased by an average of 2.1% per quarter.The trade deficit was at its historical lowest level throughout the 1990s, and the average £0.3 billion during this period. This trade deficit was 24% of the import value. As of Q2 2019, the trade deficit is £2,540m, or 58% of import value.
